I found this 1974 quarter and looked strange. I can see the circle in the middle might be toning but I don't understand what happen to the mint mark?

Looks like a partial broken post on the MM. As for the toning, maybe a dime was lying on top of it for a long time?

From these pictures, my guess is staining. The mint mark might be circulation flattening. It doesn't quite look like a broken post. Just my Two Cents, hang out for more opinions.

Edit: I see that partially broken post now that you point it out, Coinfrog. I missed your comment at first while replying at the same time.

Agree with partially broken post. with a good deal of circulation wear (maybe an old hit then worn).

That ring around the obverse looks suspiciously like a coin-crimping ring, where this coin may have been an ender on a bank roll of quarters. It may have stayed like that for a while to get it to tone differently. Just a few of my thoughts.

Environmental toning/staining. I am in the broken post camp as well.

You have to remember that some coin are tossed into fountains at the malls. This can discolor a coin when left there for a long time.
