I am still learning and starting to think my microscope isn't very good. Am I getting shadows?

The shadows are all the same thing DDD. An aging die. Not a doubled die. Just the fields are affected. on a doubled die the devices are affected. On DDD just the fields are affected. (always in the direction of the closest rim)

I think your microscope is fine. Maybe just a little less light, different light source or a light filter would help. I'm not a photography expert, but I can say these are good pictures.

Maybe a filter between the light source and the coin. These are cheap. Just costs you a plastic grocery bag, a wire hanger and some tape. Bend the coat hanger in to a square:

Try using a full bag, to sides are too much, use a single layer. Depending on how stronger you light source is. Then place between the light source and coin location. That will remove the un-wanted glare. If two layers are not enough, then put white computer paper in the hanger. Don't let the bulb come in contact with plastic or paper.

When you are at the grocery store, when the cashier asks "If you would like your milk in a bag?" I tell her, "Nah, you can leave it the bottle." They aren't expecting that response. It brings a smile to them. I know I have a weird sense of humor. (More if needed)

Or when an investor tells me, you shouldn't put all your eggs in the same basket? I add, "Especially if there in a bowling ball in there."
