I'm considering starting a Standing Liberty quarter set. Does anyone have any suggestions for some good reading material on the series? Thanks!

Steve, J.H. Cline has a great book. These are his specialty. I have a Dansco with about 4 coins but never finished!

Cline's book is pretty much the seminal reference for SLQs.

Ha! That's sort of ironic. Back in the 80's when I was more active in coins than I am now I met this guy at a couple shows... "The Beard" as he is known. His name flashed across my mind when I started this topic, but I wasn't aware that he actually wrote a book. Thanks again!

I have this book and I agree it's excellent. It has lots of background material about the engraver (Hermon MacNeill) and discusses the controversy about the identity of the model for the Liberty figure. It also discusses each date and mint in the series, in detail. I haven't purchased anything from "The Beard" but he is a fine gent and I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him. He gave me this wonderful "business card" at the ANA Money Show in 2005. Possibly he didn't realize at the time that he had "rolled out" a fairly valuable 1927-S coin to produce this souvenir!

I've had a copy of that book for about 20 years. Probably first printing. Anyway, that's THE book on SLQs.

That is a great rolled coin!
I wonder how he missed that one?
Possibly in a bag of junk silver?

TreasHunt, As I recall when he gave me the rolled coin I pointed out it was a '27-S and he was surprised; he had thought it was a Denver coin. However, the mintmark is unmistakably an "S". It's a shame to ruin a decent collector coin, but the deed was done 'way back in 1983 for the ANA Convention and the piece had to end up somewhere. There's definitely room for it in my collection!

I own 2 books, both Cline's book (Which is THE book on SLQs) and the Knauss book, "Standing Liberty Quarters: Varieties and Errors" by Robert H Knauss. The Knauss book is a great reference if you're into chasing down die varieties and the like, it also gets very technical and is a great resource for diagnostics of rare varities, such as the 1918/7-S and the like.
They are wonderful coins to collect, but some of them can be a real bear to find in high grades.

WOW, that amazed me. I didn't know there was so much written about such a short termed coin. Got to order me one of those.

jaobler: Ah, 1983 makes more sense, back then there wasn't a great deal of spread on the 27D and junk silver, but still, the S? Neat find.
