My father was a Spanish living in the Philippines during World War II. Spain was neutral during those times, but my father was not. He would help the Americans in gathering information against the Japanese and he saved a few American lives not only because of those information but literally save one from being decapitated by the Japanese by declaring that the american was also Spanish. After the war this guy became a very good friend of my dad and when he left for the states he left all his military uniform and equiptment to my dad and it became my dads collection. Part of the collection were circulated US coins from his American friend. When my dad died I inherited his military collection and the coins. He was always proud of it. He would always say If not because of the Americans we would not even know what freedom is. And I agree 100%. Nobody dare talk bad about an American in front of me specially during this times of conflict where there are so many comments about the Americans. So, I continued his collection, hopefully I can complete some of it, specially the Indian cents and the Buffalo nickles my favorite, and because I like the beauty of US coins and if I'm not mistaken it is the only or one of the country where you can get in circulation coins that are 50 years old or older.

What a great story--your dad was a brave man. There are a lot of good memories in the things your dad left for you, and a fascinating way to be introduced to US coins.

What a wonderful story! Quote: manilagalleontrade: ..."If I'm not mistaken (the U.S.) is the only country (or one of the few countries) where you can get in circulation coins that are 50 years old or older." This is true! The Euro, Decimalization and Demonetization have changed a lot of countries' coinage bases in the last 50 years. Canada is another country where old coins can be found in circulation. Some of our forum members find U.S. Wheat Cents in Canada, and I have found a couple of 1950's Canadian coins this year! Not enough people in The U.S./Canada appreciate the fact that you can still get a 1950's (or even older) coin handed to you in your change! ( although everyone reading this sure does! )

Hi Manilla, It's refreshing to hear a pro-America viewpoint. America hardly has a monopoly on heroism, but we do have many heroes (and heroines!). We just don't hear about them very much in the media.
Thanks for sharing your story. Your Dad was a father to be proud of.
