I have had my nickel collection in an old Whitman album. Over the years the clear sheets that cover the holes and coins had turned yellow. So I slid out the covering Which was very discolored, but to my surprise, so were the nickels. Her is the worst one. ( the reverse got the worst of the discoloring from the slide in clear sheet.

Seems to be an attractive, natural album toning.

It looks better on the proofs. I'll post one up here, one that did not tone and one that toned out real good. Give me a bit to save them and crop them down.

I like it - adds some character to an otherwise common date nickel!

Just one of the reasons people have gone away from Whitman. Remember Whitman is now made in China. Slides could be made of almost anything. Best to get some clear sheets of plastic and make new slides. Then put Album in Zip Lock bag.

Personally, I like the toning. It's not like the nickels were wrapped in aluminum foil and slowly baked at 250 degrees.

Quote: Best to get some clear sheets of plastic and make new slides. Naw, that is one way to solve it, but the best way, is to remove them from Whitman completely, and place them into Dansco albums, Which is what I'm doing for all my coins that are trapped in a Whitman.

I think they look great. Most of my Jefferson nickels have the same tone, especially on the proofs.

In my opinion, nickel coins tend to exhibit the most beautiful toning of any coins. The subtle golds, blues and magenta you often see on album-toned nickels, particular on MS graded examples, can be spectacular. About 4 years ago, a small dealer I've done business with auctioned their set of high grade toned Buffalo nickels, built over a 12 year period, and it was a sight to see. I still go back and view the archive images every now and then...
