I have a couple of 1965 quarters that I need your opinions on. Both have similarities but I'm not sure if it is an attributed variety. They appear to be different stages of the die.

The motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, is very similar to both.

1965-Quarter-Variety?

Both have the same die breaks on the base of the bust and back of the head.

Both have the long "N" in the motto on the reverse. Even some of the polishing marks are identical.

The main differences are in the Machine Doubling of the profile and LIBERTY.

1965-Quarter-Variety?

What intrigues me most is the doubling around the "I" and "N" in the motto. Is that Die Deterioration? Or possibly double punch?

Both have Machine Doubling in the same direction. It happens.

Thanks for pointing that out. Just for my own information, can Machine Doubling happen in more than one direction on a single coin? The doubling on the profile is to the east but the doubling that I pointed to in the motto is toward the west. Just a newbie trying to learn.

Yes, it can happen in more than one direction.

And let me introduce you to Coop, our resident know it all. Check out the CoopHome thread as it's basically an encyclopedia of coin errors and the minting process.

I find it fun when I come across coins with the same die features. I am saving LWC with different stages of the same die (ie.. cracked skull) just to see how many I get and can match up. Interesting what you notice as you keep searching.

IsThisAnything, I wasn't challenging Coop's opinion. I was really asking for clarification on "the same direction" in his comment. In my limited understanding of the process, I took it to mean all in one direction. I didn't know that Machine Doubling could happen in different directions on the same coin. Hence the question.

I came here to learn, knowing it could be a great place to get information. My questions were answered regarding the quarters. I learned something new. Thanks for sharing.

Also they both could have been struck with the same die. Note the die scratches, the die imperfections being the same. That doesn't mean they are doubled dies.
