Does anyone have a link to the "Stairs" error on the Jefferson reverse?
Rest in Peace

The 1938 nickel has wavy steps.
1939 P D and S nickels can be found with both 1940 straight and 1938 wavy steps.
1939 Proof nickels can be found with both too.
Those 1939 Proofs with the straight steps of 1940 are more desirable.
There are very few 1940 Proof nickels that can be found with the 1938 wavy steps.
These are quite rare and valuable.
LATE EDIT:
At the bottom of this webpage it says:
Please feel free to link to this page!
So here we go.
Thanks Carl! webmaster

He could be talking about the transition reverses between 1938, 1939, and 1940.

These aren't errors, they are varieties.

Yes they are varieties, and I still am not sure if our Orig Poster particularly meant for this to be clarified, but I don't know of any other topic except full steps that has any significance in this series pertaining to the steps (stairs)

Thanks for all of the replies.

I was talking about the actual number of steps. I heard that there are some with an extra step (possible DDR?) or maybe it's missing one. I can't remember the exact details.

According to Numismatic News a nickel can be considered as a full step nickel if it has 5 full steps in the date range of 1938 to and including 1989.
1990 and afterwards must have 6 full steps to be considered as a full step nickel.
However, I have some 6 step nickels that are dated prior to 1990 but I don't think that it is an error, just a good find.
