TNG Bedrock of the Community United States 10284 Posts	Posted 01/03/2009 11:37 pm The 1938 nickel has wavy steps. 1939 P D and S nickels can be found with both 1940 straight and 1938 wavy steps. 1939 Proof nickels can be found with both too. Those 1939 Proofs with the straight steps of 1940 are more desirable. There are very few 1940 Proof nickels that can be found with the 1938 wavy steps. These are quite rare and valuable. I heard that there are some with an extra step (possible DDR?) or maybe it's missing one. I can't remember the exact details. Report this Post to the Staff
TNG Bedrock of the Community United States 10284 Posts	Posted 01/04/2009 01:48 am According to Numismatic News a nickel can be considered as a full step nickel if it has 5 full steps in the date range of 1938 to and including 1989. 1990 and afterwards must have 6 full steps to be considered as a full step nickel. However, I have some 6 step nickels that are dated prior to 1990 but I don't think that it is an error, just a good find. Report this Post to the Staff
