Hello and Good evening!

I've recently bought a 1909-S from a reputable auction site that guarantees authenticity. Of course, I'm concerned about fakes and counterfeits.

The reverse has what looks like a double die. The S, stems, ribbon, and parts of the lettering have what appears to be a double die. I've included pictures. Realized price $450 + 15% BP. I grade it as EF40-45.

PLEASE let me know what you think! Fake or totally awesome?

Cheers!
-Stephen

The doubling looks to be Machine Doubling. Appears flat and shelf-like with no notching. Also the mintmark having identical doubling to the other elements is a clue to this as the mintmark was not added to the die during the hubbing process, it was added to the die by hand later.

Excellent explanation, thanks Tanman. The bit about the mintmark was brilliant.
Have a great evening!
