Hi everyone. I have this Trade dollar from an old type set. It looked like a nice AU coin with some old cleaning. When I photographed it, I noticed that the eagle and some parts of seated liberty where outlined by scratch. Is this called tooling?
How does it affect the value on this particular coin?

At best VF details (cleaned), assuming it's genuine. Agree that looks like tooling in these pics. Are these lines incuse?

Are you able to tell if the marks surrounding the eagle on the reverse are raised or incuse?

On the obverse, Ms Liberty's toes and the gown covering the right leg have definitely been tooled.

On the reverse, the tooling is obvious around the eagle. It starts out from the beak and appears to have been gone over several times.

May have been a 'practice' coin.

XF details (damaged)

definite tooling around eagle. notice how the tool line around this area extends into the field where the tool went past the edge of the wing

Thanks all.
The lines are incuse.
I'm in the process of parting out the type set.
Any idea of what a fair price for this coin is with the tooling accounted for?
It is hard to find a comparable example online.

I personally would find it hard to spend more than $100 on it.
Agree with the frog about grade and damage.

EF-45 details, scratched (tooled), cleaned.
Not whizzed, that is a process of using a high speed wire brush to skin the surface to try to create cartwheel luster, starting in the center working out to the rim. Usually easy to tell with the pits left in protected areas where the tips of the brush barely touches.
