This Trade dollar is up for auction this weekend in a local auction. I don't have much experience with Trades. What are your thoughts about this one? Sellers photos and I don't have any others. Looks like type I/I.

The coin appears genuine, but has been cleaned/dipped. The are some specs under the leaves if those are cast bumps, then it is a cast copy. XF Details Pass

Pretty nice pics for an auction house. I don't see anything suspicious, but I'm always wary about raw Trade dollars. There are too many excellent fakes out there.

I'm not familiar with Trade dollars but I know a little about counterfeits. They are either altered real coins, or stamped in a counterfeit press, or cast in molds. And when coins are cast in molds, often because the mold isn't perfect there will be casting bumps and/or voids where the casting material didn't completely fill in an area. There are some areas on this coin that concern me within the letters S, F, and M on the obverse. They look like voids which could not happen in a press. Now I'm not saying this coin is counterfeit, only that those need closer examination, and since you do not have the coin you cannot do.

Not much eye appeal. I would pass and go for a better example in a TPG holder.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will enjoy the nice weather and skip the auction.
