Hey Coin Collectors,

I found this steel penny today and I noticed it has copper streaks? Is this normal?

This looks to me like a cent that was once plated and that plating has/is wearing off, exposing the copper under it.

@big, can you please confirm that this cent is strongly attracted to a magnet? Thx.

Looks to me like it has been plated with copper that has worn off.
Someone has tried to make a 1943 steel cent into a copper one.
2.7g is the right weight for a steel cent

But why would the 'copper coating' wear off the low points and not the higher spots as expected?

At first site I thought it was a copper 43 plated with zinc . I now agree It's a steelie plated with copper in the middle stages of wearing off .

Possibly the plating adhered better on the high spots but it doesn't really matter.
What matters is that it couldn't have happened during the striking of the coin
so it is some form of PMD.

To me it looks like some very fresh rust considering it's so bright.

Hey Party Peeps,

Sorry for the delay. I am just getting up from a long night. To confirm, this is a steel cent. It does stick to a magnet. But why does a steel cent have traces of copper on the outside? Was this done from the mint? Or did someone try to pass this off as a copper 1943 cent?
