As I have got into coin collecting only in the past 2 years, I started getting these with the 2018 ATB Annual Uncirculated set. I find that although the reverses have great detail, the Washington obverse doesn't always come without a nick or mark here or there. Furthermore I bought off ebay a 2011 and some of the coins look like they had hairlines degrading them to the MS60-62 range and the best samples possibly a MS 64. The ones from 2018 - 2020 were from the US Mint and seem to fall in a grade range of about MS63 - 66. Please note I am talking about business strike coins not proofs.

What has your experience getting these either direct from the US Mint or the secondary market? And is there a risk when purchasing older sets that even if well-stored and properly handled, the coins can get hairlines or other abrasions just from tiny movements within the coin capsules? I have noticed that you can open the capsule to take a better look (I have done this to just check if the capsule or the coin got a scratch, with the US Mint sets usually it is the capsule).

Are there other clad sets where you have gotten higher grade ATB Quarters than from the Annual Uncirculated sets such as the 3 coin sets or the Annual US Mint sets when they are first put on sale?

The coins from the Mint have NOT been carefully handled, they get no special treatment. So you best bet is buying the coins in person from a dealer where you can examine them in hand and select the ones you want that meet your grading standards. Of course since the dealer is making nearly nothing off of you purchase don't be surprised if they get upset with you "wasting their time" while you go through coin after coin.

They are uncirculated but they don't claim they will be prefect either. Same goes with mint sets also.

MS 63 is a bit low in my opinion most are going to be MS65 or MS66. Any time you buy a set from a 3rd party though you run the risk of them picking through them and piecing together a set of the rejects to resell. And sending the nice ones for grading, in essence already cherry picking them.

Big Kingdom - that is probably what happened to the 2011 set I got. Maybe I am being a little sever in my judgement but none from it were more than MS65 and some were just at MS62/63.
I have seen this to a lesser extent with the Annual Uncirculated Dollar sets which always feature a nice Burnished W ASE along the dollar coins issued that year (but each from only one mint). The ASEs are in great condition but the dollar coins vary --- in one case it seems the owner had scratched an x on an Eisenhower golden dollar!

When it has come to medals, individual coins (even those in OGP), I have not encountered such problems. Also I have not had much problem when I got the Native American coin and currency set as well as a commemorative set here and there. Another factor that makes it harder to judge the quality of Annual Uncirculated sets and Proof sets is the difficulty properly photographing them due to the great reflectivity of the Mint/Proof state surface. Also a risk is when the seller is offering a product they have in bulk --- I have gotten a 2006 Mint set online and all looked well until I say one nickel with weird reddish toning at its rim, with none of the other coins displaying this. I know this can happen over time even if you buy something straight from a government Mint, but this highlights the superiority of shopping at local coin shops or, if online, an extremely trusted dealer whom you have spent some time checking their goods. Fortunately, the purchases mentioned were not complete busts - they offer some appealing coins and all were low cost. Nevertheless lesson learned regarding sets - probably best to get them from a reputable coin dealer and peruse those they have in stock.
