Not a mint error, but rather this coin was cancelled previously. There are a few folks who collect these and we occasionally see them posted here.

For whatever reason, that quarter didn't meet the US Mint's quality standards and was intentionally defaced.

yeah, it's what the mint does to cancel coins before scrapping. so the scrappers won't pull them out and use them as money. looks like they are pulling them out and selling them, no idea what the problem was to get it cancelled though. I'd say it's a mint error of some sort, I mean they cancelled it so the mint felt it was unfit for circulation and needed to be scrapped. I just can't say what the issue was. Try weighing it I suppose, give it a good once over. I think they will scrap the whole bin of the run if they notice a problem with some of them, so it might not be an error at all, and there were errors mixed in with it they wanted to eliminate. Something like this: https://coinweek.com/education/coin...-error-coin/a washington State Quarter on a Sacagawea planchet, now that's unique and I think collectible, even if cancelled, but I don't have much interest in seemingly normal cancelled coins, personally. I'd like the one in the article I linked though!

Not positive, but I think the mint cancels the coins in batches if they find a problem with "some" of the run they cancel a "batch" of them. There for this particular coin may not have anything wrong wit it,it was just part of the "batch" John1

If they just sent them to recycling, with out the waffle affect, it removes anyone using the coin to cheat a vending machine. Blanks can be canceled as well.

Oh, I'm very jealous. I'd love to have one of these. I'm all about the story behind the coin.

Thanks for the offer, Wayne Bruce. You'll come to appreciate the aforementioned rules. It helps to weed out the bad apples and makes this forum a very friendly place to learn.
John, you're right. I should just give in and buy one. It's catching it in the wild that I love the idea of, but it would still be cool to have an example.
