Hi Guys, My knowledge on war medals is very limited. Recently, I come across this set of nice WW 1 medals and since they'd make a great display inside a frame, I thought I may buy them. They're on a local dealer here and for $ 105 shipped. The cardboard box is also included. Do you think thats a fair money to pay for this pair? Also, War Medal seems to have a lot of darkening on it. Should I leaeve it as it is, or should I try finding a non-abraihesive method to clean it just a bit, but not too overpolish? I did some reserach on the person who was awarded with the medal, he served quite late in the war after June 1918 in Western Front (Google), under the (most probably) 11th Battalion of Royal Scots Fusiliers. He survived the war and got discharged from the Army. I found his medal card and recipent record using British National Archives online. Its also atatched in this post. However, there is not much about him. Any insight and comments are welcome. Edited by molydeii 06/05/2021 6:59 pm

Ooh! That's an L, not and S on the medal sheet. My bad. I'm terrible on reading handwriting. It says that Royal Lancashire has also served in Gallipoli, which happens to be my hometown. Is there any place where I can find anything based on regimental number of Mr. Finch? Maybe he had been here during the war.

Oh my, I don't know much about these interesting medals and I could be wrong but being your hometown could be relative that Lancashire Fusiliers might be correct. I tried to find more about my guy on my medal. {Sneddon} and recall finding a list of Sneddons back when I did the research but could not find out anything about my guy. You are way ahead of the game knowing about Private Finch. I like your set a lot. Very nice!

That's really exciting! Thank you TNG! You're helping me a lot! I was going through National Archives of the UK and found a Royal Scot Fusilier Finch with a matching service number. Some place on Google says that his service number issued late in the war, most probably his unit saw some action Spring-Summer 1918 in Flanders and or in France.
I also remember reading online that many records of the Navy and the Engineers of the WW1 were lost when London was bombed in WW2. Maybe that's why Engineer Sneddon's records are gone.

looking at your dealers asking price, it seems fair to me but perhaps you could offer less or ask for a better price politely. A good dealer knows when he has a fish on the hook so don't let on too much. I sometimes look at a few other items for less money first when catching the fisherman and then nibble on the one I really want. It seems you like the set but it is entirely up to you. The one medal is silver. These are not hard to find but a set like your find is most likely a lot more scarce. Glad I could help a little. Be well!

Well, I bought the set. :-) I thought they'll be a nice addition to a WW 1 collection. I'll post some pictures when they arrive. One question though, anyone can advise a method to remove some of the dark patina visible on the silver medal? Ido not want to polish it, just remove some darkness for the details underneath be visible a bit. Any advices?

I wouldn't remove the dark toning personally. I think they look best just as they are. They won't change in the next 25 years if stored properly so it is something worth putting off. You can't put that aged patina back on. Most medal collectors will agree. Leave them as is. Glad you got them!
