Mystery 1979 Quarter .25 Die Error Or Manipulated Coin

maxcz New Member United States 4 Posts	Posted 06/07/2021 2:32 pm The first photo obviously shows the whole coin, 1979d. The most obvious is the raised area that appears to start from Washingtons' nose running down to his throat. Closer inspection reveals that it actually begins above the ear. Washingtons' nose, chin and the we (In God We....) are imprinted over this line. There are several bends and dips that don't show up in the picture. On the reverse in the 9 o'clock area the wing appears to be malformed. This item was sold to me as a Major die clash/planchet error. Don't worry I didn't pay much for it. I don't know if this is a real error or a manipulated coin. I hope you folks can help. Thanks in advance. Report this Post to the Staff

Spence Moderator United States 34416 Posts	Posted 06/07/2021 2:46 pm @max, whenever we see clad coins with odd bulges on them like this, we attribute this to them being exposed to high heat after leaving the mint. For that reason, we call them campfire coins. The dark surface staining on your coin seems to back up that hypothesis.
