Finally decided to look around in this section and I'm just floored to how beautiful some of these commemoratives are. I love the Texas, Illinois and many more!
So I guess my question would be where to start? Should I start a set of these, or just pick those I like. How expensive would a set be roughly...assuming MS coins or somewhere close. Any fakes out there or anything else buying wise I should be careful of? So if you have any useful websites or something, please share as I'd like to become a more educated buyer before I dive into the commemorative world :) Are there key dates that are really expensive?
Thanks all.

When I dived into my early commem. type set, I had no idea how expensive it was going to be. There are a few that can be bought for under $100 (Booker T. Washington, Stone Mountain, and others), but most of them are in the $150-400 with a few going into the $1000s-2000s (Hawaii comes to mind, so does Spanish Trail). But, they are stunning to look at, and if you go slowly (I can't emphasize that enough), you won't be too much in debt, and you'll have an outstanding collection. Overall, they are really fun! By the way, I'm talking about early commemoratives (1892-1954), not those awful modern ones.

You are wading in deep waters There are a few inexpensive commems(<$50) but I would say about half can be had for $100-$200 with the rest in the $200-500 range. There are two show stoppers in the Hawaiian Sesqicentennial(about $2000) and the Old Spanish Trail(about $1200). Some commems can be found circulated in mainly AU but also some EFs and that can lead to a decent discount over MS. Keep a keen eye towards any circulated examples as many of them have also been abused in some way but there are still some unmolested examples out there(look in the Lincoln commem thread, mine is EF45).

From the looks of some of those prices, I might just have to pick and choose a few to satisfy my need! I'll take the advice of going slow very seriously ;) I was hoping most of these comms could be had for under $100.
Thanks for the heads up :)

You could also get a couple blank half dollar pages from Whitman or Dansco and create your own commem set

Maybe it was just the quiet holiday period but I found a near unc stone mountain for under $30 and the 1920 pilgrim trecentenary in unc for under $60.Oregon trail in unc under 100 and the lexington is well under the $50. Patience and timing is the key.

Yeah, I have been trying to pick up commemorative halves for under $100 and my collection is relatively small.
What's small? About a half dozen of them.

I personally would not get that coin graded. Lexingtons are among the most common commemoratives you'll find out there in lower (relatively lower, for commemoratives) grades. I'd say save the grading fee and apply it to the purchase of your next commem.

Some turn their nose up at the Ultra Modern Commem's., but I think some of them are just as beautiful !......certainly cheaper. But throw 50 years on some of these new ones and they might double or tripple in price too......and maybe not...who knows....but they certainly have "eye appeal" IMHO as well.

Quote: But throw 50 years on some of these new ones and they might double or tripple in price too The biggest difference is that classic commem mintages are usually in the tens of thousands while modern commem mintages are in the hundreds of thousands. But you are quite correct that some of the moderns are very nice as well.
