Your "G" is really a "C" with a die chip in it. A lot of the 2021 Nickels we're seeing have age related issues.

since the anomaly appears on both side of the C, I'm thinking it might be a die gouge

It is above the surface, but it maybe a peel from another device. If so, then it is not firmly attached.
