My new photo setup allows me to capture the surfaces of the coins I shoot.

This 1865 Two Cent with a Retained Cud (ID RDC-2c-1865-04R on Cuds-On-Coin) shows that this is a nice coin, but using a new copy stand, macro tubes and multi-point LED photographic light setup REALLY brings out the detail of the surfaces.

Now, I just have to reshoot every error coin in my collection!

While you are re-shooting, Experiment with a darker background color. The excess light will be absorbed and the true color will show through. Try make a side by side of each (lighter/darker) color of backgrounds to see which you prefer better?

Coop, THANKS! I usually shoot on a flat black "Paint Chip" from the hardware store. I have a wheel of paint chips with about 20 different colors, but as you suggest, a dark background seems to be best! I was just playing with the new setup and had a diaper on the copy stand and was manipulating the coin. That's why you can see the cotton gloves. I was so pleased with the results that I just used my test shots for this post.

I usually change the background to red patterned image that I produce in Photoshop before I post an image. This helps me identify my images when I see them used on other web sites.

When you get ready to make some more quarter overlays for the newer coins, I've discovered how to make them pop easier:

I use images from the mint site. One of each of the proof and business strikes. The proof strikes are the ones I color and they are easy to erase around a lot easier. The Business strikes are the base images, overlay with the proof images. The frosting on the proof coins allow the color to be a lot stronger. The images on the USMint.gov site are hidden. But if you need a quick find, make these choices.
Home page: Click on 'LEARN' On the Tool bar.
From the learn page, look at the bottom choices and choose "Image Library"
From there, "Circulating coins." Then make your choices.

I think I remember reading that a 14% gray scale works best for a background? Yokozuna your coin photos always looked great, now I am not sure if I like the old ones or your new set up better.
