Hi friends,

I have found grading other coins pretty straight forward, but grading Morgans seems more complicated to me. Here is a Morgan out of my grandfather's shoe box where it has been for 40 years. Let me tell you what I see and you tell me if I am correct. First and most obvious it has black spots all over it - this makes it upgradable - yes? Let's say the black spots weren't there the scratch in front of the forehead would be considered a "detailed" scratch as would the one infront of her stray curl. Yes the scratch on the reverse above and below "in God We Trust" would be called a scratch. Finally If we hypothetically removed the detailed scratches and the reverse scratch, and the black spots, I would grade this at a 55? Let me know how I did.

The black spots can lower the grade because of eye appeal, but the coin can receive a straight grade with black spots. Black spots can make a coin harder to sell as some collectors will not buy a coin with spots. From your photos I agree with 55 or 58. There appears to be some wear on the upper part of the breast with no luster.

I'd guess mid AU. The rim ding on the rev is problematic as far as straight grade.

AU-55 seems about right. Probably details, if those black spots represent corrosion spots. Not sure that the heavy bag marks on the obverse or the reverse rim ding would be enough to detail it. And the photos aren't clear enough to assess the surface on the reverse.

AU55/58 area. the glare from the overhead lighting is washing out some of the devices and fields. I agree the rim hit would details the coin before the scratches on this one. i'd like to see the coin with natural indirect lighting to determine if the surfaces are original

AU-58 details. Rim hits and carbon spots.
