Hi,

Can someone help me with this 1896 morgan? I see the s mintmark bottom of the eagle head. Is this a error coin? Any info would be great.

Thanks

I don't think you are seeing a mint mark - just an artifact of circulation wear.

If it was a mm, it would be raised as it would be incuse in the die.
As stated, just a mark that looks similar to a S.

Toning/pareidolia artifact, not a misplaced mint mark.

Of course, the mintmark on the Morgans is always on the reverse, above the letters DO in DOLLAR in that little space, if any (in which that it would be minted at Philadelphia).

Thanks for all the replies. I just find it odd that the toning created an S on the bottom of the eagle head.
