As the die becomes more aged, the coins being struck retain less detail, often making the devices seem enlarged. Not only that, but there also seems to be some Die Deterioration Doubling going on as well. Report this Post to the Staff

These appear sometimes several times, get polished off, but the devices die wear can't be removed. The field reduction can make devices smaller, but on dimes they must be deeper? Often times these enlarge as the devices continue to wear. So that is what you are seeing on your coin. Just part of the die aging process. Report this Post to the Staff

coinchatter Valued Member United States 70 Posts	Posted 06/22/2021 1:51 pm I just posted a Lincoln 1981D cent. It seems that during the mid 1980s there are a lot of coins with the "thickening". The coin that I posted has the same characteristics. I thought sure it was a DDO but it seems I was wrong. These posts are very educational and I appreciate them...but one of these days, am going to find that grail...one of these days.. Report this Post to the Staff
