Habib Alimohamma Valued Member Australia 143 Posts	Posted 06/22/2021 06:29 am Hi, I came across a 1968-D US Kennedy half dollar which should be %40 silver with 11.5g in weight. This coin has 11.29g weight, so I decided to analyse its composition, and I found that this coin is made up with 79.34 percent silver and the rest is copper!!! With this % of silver it's weight should be around 12.5g, but it's weight is about vopper- nickle one!!! May I have your suggestions? With regards, Habib. Report this Post to the Staff

Yokozuna Pillar of the Community United States 4618 Posts	Posted 06/22/2021 06:47 am Forty Percent Silver Kennedy half dollars are composed of two outer layers containing 80% silver and 20% copper with an inner core of 20.9% silver and 79.1% copper (net composition: 40% silver and 60% copper). The device is only reading the top most layer of the coin. It cannot read through to the core, so it looks as if it's giving the correct and normal reading.
