1983 Lincoln Cent - Possible Struck Through Capped Die?

Zurie Pillar of the Community United States 5672 Posts	Posted 06/23/2021 11:59 am I was going through some old error coins this weekend, and I found this coin that I had pulled out of circulation in the 1980's. I stuck it in a 2x2 back then, and it remained tucked away in a storage box until a few days ago. Sadly, more than 30 years in a 2x2 didn't save it from some scattered zinc oxidation. I don't think I knew back then what kind of error this was, but I believe it's a struck through capped die? Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 06/23/2021 8:29 pm While at first I was thinking grease, but noticed the affected area. The central area is where a struck through a die cap would show. Note also the rims are affected oddly. I feel this is a thinning die cap and the pushed out areas on the rims are the Bending of the thinning die cap. It has lost it shape so much it is not distorting from the saucer like edges. So it is wear thinner on each strike and will probably fall off soon. Great coin to post because it is something me something new that I had not thought about before.
