Pics do not show field details clearly enough to grade.

I wouldn't buy just from these pics. How is it described?

The coin does not look natural for circulated gold. It reminds me of gold coins that have had putty added to hide the marks, and the darker colors on the fields look strange.

It's been Graded by a Canadian TPG (CCCS) as AU50. No details are noted or described. It is slabbed in a plastic sleeve, which may be impacting the photos (?). From my very amateur viewpoint it appeared to graded fairly, but definitely seeking other opinions.

It most likely is the photos hiding the marks and circulation rub of a circulated coin.

Looks like a decent coin, although the photos could be better. The dark spot under AM in AMERICA could be a concern. Otherwise the strike and color look good, there are few contact marks, and detail looks like AU-55 or 58 rather than 50.
Not so easy to find nice examples of this type. If the price were right I might be tempted.

Hey Jaobler. The piece is up for auction and I am intrigued. I cannot see anything, although these are the best images, that would indicate cleaning. What do you think the 'dark spot' might be?

Best guess about that dark spot is that it's a gouge in the surface. Might be enough to generate a "damaged" judgment but based on this photo it doesn't look that bad. Problem-free slabbed examples in AU55 and 58 sell in the $1000-$1300 range. AU details coins go for maybe $500 less.
I'd be interested in this piece at maybe $800, especially if you could return it after purchase.

Worst case AU-58, maybe details for a cleaning, but judging from these crappy photos this could be an MS coin. Like others said, it's a gamble but for the right price worth a shot if it has a return privilege.

Yep, there is a 30 day return. If I acquire it I will post some decent photos for input before I make a keep decision.

Need a quarter eagle Classic for my Type set. Hard to come by at reasonable price point.

Any guesses on what this piece went for?
