What could be in the heads or minds of the ones that made them?
They've heard that coin collectors pay big money for "error coins". So they deliberately put "errors" on their coins (like "1497" instead of "1947", or "1086" instead of "1986"). If someone actually knowledgeable about coins points out the mistakes, the seller goes "Oooh, you're right, it's a mint error", and doubles their asking price.
Remember, they don't need to fool everybody, all the time. They only need to fool one person, once.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
