Does anyone know of ancient, world or tokens that depict grapes or wine?

Thanks
I would like to collect coins depicting grapes since it's connected to my occupation. If there are enough of them it could be an interesting group of coins.

Great idea! I do some work in that field too.

If you go on Numista and type "grapes" in the search field, you will get over 200 hits.

They range from ancients to modern world coins.

Over 200 items on numista contain the keyword GRAPES:
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/in...apes&ct=coin

and over 100 listings there contain the keyword WINE:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/in...w=&u=&g=&se=

To be fair, not all are pictorial representations of these items, but seems like there are lots of good places to start your numismo-oenophiliac collection.

Very long history of viticulture and its consequent economic impact in many countries.

Many collectors have themes like this that cut across countries and eras.

If I were embarking on a theme like this, I would probably start with those Numista searches, and then think about how I want a subset of those coins represented in my collection. It's pretty heavy on ancients, so I think I would make sure to have a good representation of the ancient world. But there are also some neat modern coins linked specifically to winemaking, or in some cases to specific wine regions or varieties (like the Germany/Worms notgeld coin -- Hessen, so probably riesling, and the Spain La Rioja issue). I'd then set some initial parameters on scope and budget consistent with my means and the time I want to allocate to it (25 coins, $500?).

I would go out on ebay and start looking for recent sales of some of my target coins. That might lead to fine-tuning the budget. Then I would start acquiring!

That advice comes from looking back on the more haphazard way I have done things in the past, and how I would change my ways for my next numismatic adventure.

Tdziemia: Thank you for the sound (and sober& ) advice. I think I will look into starting this collection. I like that it would encompass coins from ancient times to modern. It should be an interesting set.

Please come back and show us some of your acquisitions occasionally!
Because I share an interest in this theme, I had once considered starting a new theme in my collection of (largely medieval) coins from famous European wine villages/regions. France gives opportunities like Duchy of Burgundy (maybe also meaningful to folks in the Oregon wine industry), later coins from the Bordeaux mint, papal coins from Avignon, and city issues from places like Cahors, Colmar (Alsace) and so on. A similar list can be put together for some of the main wine regions of Italy, Germany ...
Then I decided maybe I should first complete some other themes I am already working on.
