Sure this has been discussed before, but I'm curious. If you grab a handful of VG/F/VF Morgan dollars, can you necessarily determine ones that were originally DMPL or PL? Given the different environments and types of wear that these coins endured, not sure if it would be possible.

Once a Morgan loses the mirror surface and frost devices through circulation there is no way to tell if the coin had been PL or DMPL when minted. The mirror surface on a Morgan dissipates rapidly when in circulation. I have a AU55 Morgan that appears to have been a PL or DMPL when minted but difficult to check the mirror depth even on a lower AU circulated example.

I don't see how you could know, considering all original luster and surfaces are lost in lower grades, even in XF with minimal haloing luster, not sure it would be enough to determine. AU would be the cutoff to be able to determine.

These answers are what I expected and no surprise.

I expect the luster to fade away fairly quickly. But, the frosted devices - perhaps they lasted a little longer. Probably not down to VF or below.

Agree, no way to tell by the time a coin reaches this grade level.
