I've been taking part in coin auctions for many years, but as I've recently become a member of this forum, I thought I'd make use of the knowledgeable folks here and get a 2nd opinion on a coin I'm considering. It's up for auction in mid-August, and I've already put in a lowball bid. It's a 1797 Half Dime, 15 stars, and is graded VF25 by PCGS. I don't have any issues myself with the reverse, but I'd like your thoughts if the grading is reasonable for the obverse. I see a dig (maybe a planchet flaw?) between the 1 and 7 of the date, a possible scratch from Liberty's forehead through the "T" in "LIBERTY", and the toning and wear on Liberty's face and hair just seems a bit off to me (but may just be the image). Pictures are from the auction site and aren't very high resolution, which doesn't help. Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I am not an expert on this series. I do see all of the imperfections you noted. The details seem good for a VF-25. Miss Liberty seems like she may have had a little bit of drawer rub, like the raised devices had been scraped by a flat surface on the obverse. That could be a reason for the odd looking wear. I believe that it could've been net graded because of these problems.
Overall looks like a solid coin in my opinion, but again I am definitely not an expert!

This particular example hasn't seen any major auctions (at least in this holder and serial #) that I can find.

Heritage also has a nicer looking one coming up only in VF20 so a little lower grade, it does have a dark spot on the reverse and also a few scratches, but are not as prominent in the field of view. Not sure if the die break adds or subtracts for you, I know many don't like them in collection pieces unless they are going after specifically variety sets.

I've seen prices on VF range from $3400 to $5600 over the past 18 months, possibly due more to differences in varieties and or eye appeal. This isn't a great looking example, but still all 1797 coins in VF without any major issues or damage are still fairly rare and all are desirable. They do come up for auction often enough so I'd wait for one I was really happy with myself.

My 2 cents anyways, it's worth what you pay for it!

The toning color difference, and marks on liberty's face, bust, hair is a distraction. The obverse issues could turn off potential buyers at time of resale.

I agree with the upthread comments. @westcoin laid out the pros and cons very well.

In this market, the biggest risk is "gotta have it" syndrome. Prices are challenging, and nobody really knows where the market will be in a couple years. Set your absolute ceiling price, and don't budge. If you don't land this coin, others will appear eventually. Patience is key.

Thank you all for the comments and thoughts. Ultimately it'll come down to me deciding if this one will make me happy for filling this hole in my type set. I don't mind occasionally upgrading lower-cost coins, but for coins like this I try to avoid putting myself in a position of later having buyer's remorse!

@westcoin, that's a decent example on Heritage. I generally don't mind die cracks (in fact, it appears what I thought was an obverse scratch on the one I've been looking at is also a die crack, as the Heritage example has the exact same feature). However, I moved to Arkansas 3 years ago and I've avoided Heritage for larger purchases because of our 8% sales tax. Some of the smaller auction sites don't do enough business in Arkansas to require sales tax withholdings, so I've migrated towards those. Fortunately in October that'll no longer be an issue since the governor signed a bill that'll remove sales tax on numismatic items and bullion (finally!).
