It's definitely, indefinite to make out as a mint error. So I'm looking for some insight.
I can say that it's definitely a U.S. quarter, dated 1984. The mint mark looks like D. No markings that indicate sanding or scraping or wearing from machine slots was involved.
It weighs 4.72g and the edges are completely smooth as if there has never been any reeding.
What's going on here? Is the a mint mistake or post mint?

Post mint damage--didn't leave the striking chamber in this condition. I'm thinking it's a nice example of a dryer coin--trapped for a while inside the mechanicals of a commercial-grade dryer.

@make, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree with @ijn that the heavily worn fields plus thickened rim mean this was a Dryer Coin. Can you please measure the diameter for us? Thx.

Thank you all for the welcome to.
I had a feeling excessive heat was involved. Oh well, back to the search.
Here's the diameter.

. It is a so called Dryer Coin, but heat was not the culprit. Friction wore it down.

Thanks again for the welcoming greets. Because I reside in Vegas, I come across so much coin that I'm certain to find something that might be worthy of the attention. Until then, Happy Hunting!

The commercial driers are dropping the coin from a high arc and flattening the edges of the coins.

On a longer ride, the quarters get even worse looking:
