lol, I was more wondering if the mint planned on eliminating him, as we can't have official currency with his image until he has been dead 2 years or more.

yeah I think he died 3 or 4 years ago so he should be eligible. There was some sort of bill earlier that would have put him on some sort of coin (other then the pres dollar), might have been the half dollar or something, but it didn't get too far.

Clinton's coin would not be due until 2016 at the soonest (2017 if Carter or Bush 41 get a coin). If he, or any president, is alive when his dollar is due he will be skipped.

There was some debate on the wording of the legislation as to whether or not a president can be skipped. This centered on whether or not Reagan would have a coin if Carter were still alive. Regardless, I am sure if there were any question on the legality, Congress will quickly act on it.

I believe it was suggested to have Reagan replace Roosevelt on the Dime but it did not get very far. Even Nancy Reagan was against it.

The Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 was a change to Title 31 of the United States Code. It says specifically that to he honoured, the President will have to be deceased for at least two years.

Quote:
(n) Redesign and Issuance of Circulating $1 Coins Honoring Each of the Presidents of the United States.—
(n)(2) Design requirements.— The $1 coins issued in accordance with paragraph (1)(A) shall meet the following design requirements:
(n)(2)(E) Limitation in series to deceased presidents.— No coin issued under this subsection may bear the image of a living former or current President, or of any deceased former President during the 2-year period following the date of the death of that President.

There is no general law that forbids picturing a living person on a US coin but the legislation for the State Quarters, territorial quarters, national parks quarters, and president dollars all specifically forbid the picturing of a living person.

And they are all fairly recent, as is the rule for those programs that the person on them have to be dead for a certain amount of time. Prior to these programs, I don't know of any rule saying the same. So putting JFK on the 50 cent piece wasn't against any regulations.

All that being said..

Heee heeee..... Guess I've called it a penny all my life, but now that I collect coins - I have to call it a cent. I can't make cents out of this penny.. Maybe the new cent design coming out will have Penny wrote on the back? Think I need a nap...
