Hi Coin Community. I need a little help trying to figure out a coin that seems to be an "UCO"? Unidentified Coin Object. Made that up myself. I found this coin about a year ago and I've run out of options so I'm hoping you can help. I'm new, I love it and I've been reading books, googling, etc., before trying to ask questions before I ask. I'm learning, bur not as easy as I thought. I'm not an historian by any means is what I've learned. 2014 D Lincoln Penny, very small. I've taken to coin shop, they sent me to get x-rayed, 79% zinc, 21% copper, weighs 2.2 g. Took it to jewelers, baffled, but believe it to be fake, but offered to send for grading. Attaching pics, front and back. Coins around it are for reference. It's the 1 in the middle.

From the pictures, it looks like the rim was rubbed off either from circulation or on purpose by someone.

Your might be a Dryer Coin. However it happened, the rims have been ground down but not enough to effect the weight. Not sure why coin shops had you run around so much. Can you please show us a photo of the edge, or rim of one of the sides of this cent for us? to the CCF!

I agree with merclover. I think you have a very early stage Dryer Coin.

It's so much smaller than a regular penny though. Almost looks like it's peeling off. It only weighs 2.2 g?

Quote: Almost looks like it's peeling off. That is the copper plating having been worn through enough that the underlying zinc core is now visible.

with some sort of mechanical damage to the coin reducing its diameter and thickness.

Not easy to figure this forum set up out. I am trying to comment to the person, miss Italy, with the 2014 D penny that people are saying is dryer error. I have one that looks similar, but mine has some cracked off edge besides, and a couple pit holes. The shield on the back is very similar in that the bottom tip of it is flat, not the slight raise above coin surface they normally have. And it also has dark color. It begs the question of a dryer issue as a coincidence. I had sat it aside when going through my change because it is so weird.

Inj the past year that I have been posting here, I have learned a lot. I now think that this coin posted above had been sanded down around the edge to reduce it. If you, MsQueue, please start at the beginning and start your own topic and post up a picture of your coin. the experts the visit this place will be more than happy to help you out. Also

If the coin had an XRF and came back 79% zinc and 21% copper I don't see how it couldn't be something if those numbers are correct. Are you sure the results are accurate?

It is a shame that there are so many fingerprints on those coins. a real detractor.

The rims make a coin look thicker, but also protects the devices. On your coin the rims are removed showing the real thickness of the planchet. Just a damaged coin and a spender. The zinc rot will set in quick on this coin, eventually leaving a copper colored Hershey's wrapper. Spend it while it is still in shape. Just noticed, I'm getting close to 58K soon.
