Hello all. Going through some rolls yesterday I found this interesting cent. It has 2 circular impressions on the obverse that have partly covered or erased( not sure of the right word to describe that) the middle of Liberty and the date. The BE in liberty is gone as well as the what I'm guessing is an 8 in the date. The bottom half of the 9 is also not visible, and the 6 at the end of the date is obscured. Part of IGWT is Lso missing or blurred on the bottom halves. Is this a weak strike of some kind? I haven't come across this before. Any help is appreciated as always.

I have NEVER seen anything like this before - I would say a strike through something, or mechanical damage.

My vote is mechanical damage on this cent.

Deliberate damage by some sort of mechanical wheel.

This is an interesting one. I suspect it's just peculiar damage, but it could be some sort of crazy Die Deterioration

I think it's damage, but I will contact Mike Diamond on this one, to be sure.

I have to side with the majority and conclude that these shallow circular troughs are some kind of post-strike alteration. While grease deposits can produce circular depressions, these are always confined to the area right next to the design rim. The inner trough is too far from the rim to represent a grease strike.
