I was fortunate enough to get a box from a bank a couple of months ago and it had a few original wrapped bankrolls of 2008 cents along with a few other dates and customer wrapped circulated rolls.

Sifting through them one by one I came across a full roll of these in BU all being identical, as you can see the top and bottom loop on the top right-hand side has a small portion of a second misaligned impression of the 8 protruding out from it, the 0 beside it has very minor doubling on the top right-hand side aswell.

As you can see the digit is not affected by Machine Doubling and I am fairly confident this is not Die Deterioration either, the characteristics of this lead me to believe it is truly hub doubled.

No other devices were affected and when Machine Doubling or Die Deterioration Doubling are the cause, you will typically see the effects of such on other design elements such as the beads or denticles.

What I've found with large cents is that, with hub doubling, more than just 1 or 2 characters are affected. I can't tell from here and I don't know enough about the modern mint ways that they contain/tighten/lock the dies in place to prevent any movement for MD. I can definitely see the "under-image" peeking out.

okiecoiner,

What I have noticed is each denomination has its own unique way of being doubled when they are subject to a misaligned or tilted second impression when the working punch creates the working die.

Small cents seem to mostly have the dates, bud or legends doubled and nothing else, most likely due to their size.

As for bigger coins like the Loon Dollars and two dollar coins when they show the effects of hub doubled elements you find it can be more severe and spread out to almost everything, however the beads never seem to be affected.

Example, the 1964 and 1965 doubled bud small cents, it is one single detail that is doubled yet you find nothing else is affected.

When looking at doubled dies for the 5 cent nickel almost all examples known are restricted to the center, there was a big misconception regarding this being due to the "single squeeze method" but the 2012 and 2013 DDO examples debunk that theory as the entire legends can be found with clear split serifs and notching.

Ive spent the last year and a half 100% focused on Canadian doubled dies on modern coins from 1940 to present and figureing out the why, when and how.

I recall reading on here a while back someone asking how many doubled dies can be found on Canadian coins, I do have a specific number in mind but my answer for now is hundreds.

I also managed to figure out what dates and denominations are common and which ones are the result of master die doubling.

I know almost nothing about "modern" coins and I use Queen Liz as my break point, although really, I do very little past 1920. 007 ... how come you don't post on other sites? PM me ple ASE

With all the time I have been spending on docmenting doubled dies and writing my book I just havent found the time to explore more sites to post on, once my book is out of the way I will probably venture off and make accounts on more sites and do some posting but for now coin community is my go-to.

I chose to hunt and document all denominations of Canadian coins from 1940 to present searching for doubled die varieties mainly because they have been under-documented and mixed up with Die Deterioration and Machine Doubling, so my goal is to weed out all the false doubling and give collectors legible listings that they may enjoy searching for and adding to their collections.

Im hoping it will give those interested a solid starting point and not get caught up in Machine Doubling and Die Deterioration, plus theres some pretty cool examples I discovered that I'm a little surprised nobody has ever caught before.

I also sent you a PM!
