1985 P Errors And Observations - Coin Community Forum

allcoinsaregood Pillar of the Community United States 808 Posts	Posted 07/25/2021 3:54 pm A prime example of why you don't clean your coins! This 1985P obviously had been cleaned and was bright enough to catch the eye. However the coin was ruined in the run up of hunting errors of which there were several. I noticed a Ridge Ring at the top of the obverse which caused the motto to possibly defeat a DDO-001 due to a shift in the script. This was not caused by the cleaning but exasperated the effect by attracting my attention. The reverse of this coin shows a Die Crack across the O in One Cent and a long crack running from the T in United to the left bottom base of the Memorial. The left side of the Memorial is also clearly doubled. Because of the cleaning the coin's unique quality was ruined! Hopefully this will point to the error of cleaning any coin. Oh well I still have 70 plus pennies to search. Regards and thanks for looking. Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 07/25/2021 8:09 pm The obverse is showing heavy die wear and ridge rim on the Motto area. Reverse what your are seeing is not a DDR. Why not? Well all the ONE CENT area would be showing the same thing on those devices. A closer view might show die die crack on that area. Note that is flows over the top of the 'O' on ONE to the outer edge of the die. (right before the rim. If it were a doubled die it would show all the devices affected like this: A doubled die could not affect that strong on just one device. So it is a die crack. Report this Post to the Staff
