Looks like some clown or other might be seeding the beach.
From what I have read in previous threads, it wouldn't be the first time.

The coin pictured does not appear to suffer from either seawater corrosion or sand abrasion.

Agreed; it's a mass-produced replica "pirate coin", of the same type as seen in this recent thread. Which is probably the source of TNG's deja vu.
