I did a preliminary evaluation of a small hoard of 40 $20 (gold) Liberty's today on my lunch break. Someone was fortunate enough to put these away when a relative gave them these coins over a period of years. The coins were all the common years/mints, from 1877 to 1907. Most appeared to be sliders (nice AU's).

He wanted to know what my offer would be on the spot. Due to the size and "seriousness" (at least for me) of the lot, I turned him onto a more prudent avenue. I felt the coins were largely going to move based on bullion and there's too little margin and too much risk for me to take on that type of purchase.

He already talked with people at ANACS that were willing to point out which coins of the lot would be worth grading. I thought that was awesome of them to do that. I know many of them there and they are really good people. I told him to go through with that and then I would give him the latest coin show information where he get some bids and he can sell it for the highest bid at the show. Although, I'm not sure how many dealers there have the ability to fork out anything around the $40,000 or so that the lot is likely worth (plus or minus a few thousand).

That was a very cool opportunity which I'm not sure I'll see happen too often if ever again.

Wow! Neat story. Were there some clean PQ sliders in there or were they all average?

I didn't inspect everything in great detail, but I handled about half of them and did an overview of the rest...all looked no better than MS62 and at least one looked XF/AU. Nothing awe inspiring other than just a lot of gold.

Somebody "struck it rich"...maybe they should wait till prices rise to $1000 again.
You should get a piece of your choice at bullion cost for your efforts.Good luck!!

Must have been something to be looking at that much gold. Sounds like good advice though that person maybe better off splitting it into multiple lots so it is easier for smaller dealers to touch(especially with this economy, although some people might think this would help the dealer sell more?).
