I received a coin back from them awhile ago and was highly irritated at the severe undergrade I got. The coin is at least two points undergraded, and I would see no reason why it would ever grade MS-61. Anyway, I wasted a few months and $53 getting it graded in the first place, so I am very pessimistic about resending it in. I heard on here that there's a way to 'appeal' the grade directly if it seems far undergraded, so I'd like to know about that if it exists because I emailed them and was basically told to just pound sand. Thanks.

NGC has a Regrade service, which basically amounts to resubmitting the coin for a second round of grading, and the cost is the same as the first time. You're just as likely to get the results you desire by cracking it and resubmitting it that way, especially if it's that badly undergraded in the first place. Welcome to the cynical, subjective world of TPG's. What coin is it? Did you post pics here for opinions?

I think most people send coins in for "regrade" or "review" is when they think the coin is over graded and they think they should be compensated for the difference between the higher grade and what the coin actually grades or if the coin is a known fake and they missed it

Yeah I posted it superdave, it's my half eagle and most, if I recall correctly, said it should get an MS-63 grade.

I find myself questioning TPG grading--and sometimes for good reason If a TPG cannot provide a standard by which to compare any assigned grade, then a slab's label amounts to no more than one opinion and should be open to critique amongst collectors. This grading business all becomes rather superfluous if coins are judged/bought/sold on the merits of their details alone-IMO.

I send all my coins to NGC for grading. and all the TPGS has their own standard for grading coins In my opinion its usually come down to there economics or what I want to say is for instance NGC has become much more strict on giving grades out and I have heard this from many people as well as dealers, one dealer told me the other day that NGC was getting ridiculous while PCGS was getting more lax-ed in handing out grades. so this tells me that NGC is looking to be were PCGS was with the higher premium for the same stated grade as its competitor NGC. So its not really for the collector who submit coins but rather that they can gain the reputation as to the fact that NGC slabed coins are the ones to buy because they are better then the stated grade of its competitors but that can be a good thing for the people that buy NGC graded coins in the future. Just Maybe this is the way to go I think it will benefit everyone eventually. This is me cracking open a slab when I don't agree with the grade

Here's the coin, guys. The light marks on the face probably would prevent higher than a 63, but the fields are quite clean. I've certainly seen much worse in MS-63 slabs.

They gave that a 61? Are you kidding me?
I'd be mad as a hornet.

MS-61 does seem like an undergrade. These later-date half eagles (and eagles) present an interesting situation. There is little increase in price as you go up from AU-50 to MS-62. Then you basically double in price if you can make it to MS-63. I'm sure PCGS and other services recognize this and I suspect it makes them stingy about handing out MS-63 grades. I would assume that if you crack out your coin for resubmission and it upgrades only to MS-62 the increase in value will not really pay back the submission cost. I have a similar dilemma with my 1883 eagle. Auctioned as an MS-61 by Stack's, the forum opinions were mostly MS-63, I think it could make MS-63, and my local coin dealer thinks it has a shot at '63. So, I'll probably send it in. If it comes back MS-61 I'll be sure to let everyone know!

Yeah, I know what you mean. That's what I thought as well, but why 61 then? Why not at least a 62? I am reluctant to spend $50 on another certification. I mean, I could end up submitting it like...four times, which is $200. Is PCGS still more hard on these? Also, the NGC person DID keep things going and asked for the cert number and everything, so I might be able get an EXPLANATION at the very least. I'd like to see what on Earth they'd say.

From what I can see in the pics, you would have a good shot at MS62 from PCGS. But for that coin to get a 61, there has to be something we can't see.
I've got 2 PCGS certified Lib Eagles, one is an MS60 and the other a 61. The 60 is beat up really bad with a ton of bag-marks. The 61 is a lot better but no where near the level of your coin.
I would grade your coin a 63 based on the images provided. IMHO you got robbed.

IMHO, I did, too. I mean, I'd love a 64....but I'd agree in that case it'd be pushing it. It definitely deserves the 63, though.
I assure you there is NOTHING is wrong with the coin, I've checked it multiple times, and when I took it out of the PCI slab, nothing happened to it whatsoever. Actually, this photo was taken out of the slab.
I think the grader was just a chump, but eh, I'd be so irritated if it happened again.

This is what I hope to get out of my inquiries on their website. Hopefully, they'll give me a decent explanation so I can figure out if they're really just being stingy, or if I got unlucky. If I just got unlucky, I'll give it another shot.

Before you send this coin back to ngc I think you better find out if they took a picture of this coin because that is something new they are doing if they have started yet I dont know for sure. may be PCGS might be your best bet.
