I have been looking for a decent 12-S for quite awhile without spending a lot of money .

I'll say VG-10+. Not quite a Fine to me.

Full Liberty..yes, however I would like to see more of the hair detail around her neck area to pull a f-12 Therefore I'll agree with coinfrog on this one VG-10+

Good looking coin! I'm in F12 group as well, just barely.

Ok , this is the problem I'm facing ; The seller wants $275 or best offer for this coin ,lets say it's a F-12 . I just looked at Numismedia's Price Guide ; The 1912-S V-Nickel in F-12 is stated at $162 . That's quite a difference . What the heck can I possibly offer him .

The price guides can't keep up with the auction prices. I saw a vg08 looking raw 12s go for $180 on a estate auction 3 months ago. I think that a little higher than the guide is ok. Maybe for that coin if I needed it maybe $200 would be a fair enough price considering that most everything goes above book.

If you like it, then grab it, but if you know you can get a better deal and coin elsewhere, then don't be hasty. This coin is rare by mintage, not availability.

I agree with Coinfrog, keep looking. It has full LIBERTY but nothing else on the obverse. I have also been looking for a decent 12 S now that does not break the bank for about 30 years now.

the price is too far off. although a decent example I would not pay more than retail even if I liked it. plus its not 100% guaranteed that it would come back F12 if you had it graded

A lot of the lost detail is strike weakness. That explains the full LIBERTY, some stars with centrils, and loss of hair detail. It explains the detail on parts of the wreath, and lack of detail elsewhere. Remember, this was the first year branch mints struck nickel coinage.
Parts of the detail suggest F-15. That said, parts of the detail suggest VG-10, as well. Overall, it's F-12. the overall appearance is decent.
The price is way too high for this coin. IMHO, somewhere around $140-150 would be in the ballpark.
