Hi guys,

I have this 2003 P Roosevelt dime and noticed on the obverse that there is a unique metal piece at the bottom of Roosevelt's neck. Would this be considered an interior die break?

A die chip is an area that breaks off the die. This leaves a void on the die. When the next coins are struck by that void, the chip will be raised above the fields/devices on the coins struck with that die. I call them die events, as they are not created on the die, but as the die ages, the die is showing its age. Note a premium for this as there are many hundreds of thousands more of these to be struck with that die, before it is retired.

It does look like a die chip and if so, then there are most likely a larger number with a very similar feature.

To qualify for an IDB it must be 4 square mm or larger.
I have found a few of these but did not keep them.
This site has great pics and descriptions.
