Hi all,

I am pretty certain the coin pictured is Nawanagar, KM 02, Shri Jamji, Dokdo, AH(9)78. Can you please confirm this?

Also, what does frozen in reference to the date mean?
I can also spot several variations of this coin yet they are all given the same description. Is there just not enough information on the early coins to allocate varieties?
Finally, is the KM a Krause number? I didn't think Krause covered coins from such an early period. If not, what does the KM refer to.

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions.

@david, you've got lots of good questions on this post and I can help with one or two of them. When a date is "frozen", it means that these coins may have a specific year referenced in their inscriptions, but in actuality were minted for years, decades, or maybe centuries later.

As far as I know, the only 16th Century Krause book is for the German states, but perhaps this coin shows up in the 17th Century World coin book as these coins were minted in that time period too.

Yes, I think your coin is a dokdo from Nawanagar, KM#2. Krause describes that these coins were made from about 1570-1850, in many variations, all showing the date of (9)78. So you should be able to find this type of coin listed in Krause catalogs from the 18th and 19th centuries (all under KM#2).

Here's an example similar to yours.

There might be a specialized article or book about the variations, but I haven't run across it.

Thanks Spence and Seeker55. I've now catalogued all my older Indian and Nepalese coins so I'll stop pestering you all with questions (until I get more coins!)
