Strange Penny Alignment - Coin Community Forum

When I turn a regular penny over, the reverse is aligned with the obverse, but this one is off about 30 degrees. Is this unusual or common in the old cents? Thanks! R Report this Post to the Staff

Morgans Dad Pillar of the Community United States 5604 Posts	Posted 01/11/2009 9:34 pm Welcome K52, any pictures?, this is not usual, I believe the mint's -+ is 5 degrees or less.I will wait for more opinions on just how unusual, there is a tremendous amount of talent and experience here and all are very willing to help and assist all.please try to get pictures, if you place the coin in a mylar flip heads up and hold it to a mirror the view will tell all. good luck and enjoy , Mike... I have no idea what books and information you have but according to the ones I have it is worth a couple of dollars (if you can find a buyer). Yass Pillar of the Community Australia 652 Posts	Posted 01/15/2009 07:39 am In Australia, we call these Upsets. Our 2001 Federation $1 can be found upset at all degrees. We have a aussie forum member who has made a couple of 'clock' faces with the degree of the upset positioned exactly at the hour of the clock. He spends a lot of time at the local casino searching through thousands of $1 coins. He is currently putting together a clock made up of 360 degrees....an upset for every minute of the clock. He is about 20 short and has been looking for those elusive last few for some time. I understand that is also possible to get a 360 degree upset. The full rotation can apparently be identified by the positioning of the reeding. The first clock he made sold on ebay for $1200. Federation upsets sell on ebay for about $20 to $30 with the 180 degree seemingly the one to look out for. Report this Post to the Staff
