@polly, are you thinking it is an RPM? I'm not seeing split serifs--just circulation flattening.

I'm with Spence, this coin has taken a beating. Wexler has a couple possibles but I say that, only because I can't tell the mm location from the listing pics. The only way you could match this up, might be markers that are offered up on the listings and that would be a long shot. Here is the link for you to check out.

Some Machine Doubling and the area in question is probably a stain. It doesn't look raised like a RPM should be. It is to small to be a mintmark punch issue.

I see the circulation/flattening issue of the "D" but was more curious about the horizontal bar behind it...
What was there before the D covered it?
Thanks for die marker match idea but on a coin this circulated - too hard to locate!
