I won a random Wheat penny lot from an online auction company (Not ebay). I got about 150 wheat cents. They mailed them to me stuck between tape so they would be flat in the package. Now I gotta remove alot of tape residue from these pennies....yay...Grabbing the acetone, and such... I haven't looked at all of them, but I do have several earlier dates. At least one RB 1909 VDB!

Set me up an acetone station will be working through them slowly tonight. But so far at least at least a dozen from the teens, and 4 1909s. 2 are VDBs.
Yay!

Love it--tape as a primary packing medium.

Quote: Love it--tape as a primary packing medium. Well I'm guessing they didn't bump into each other during shipping. But me? I would be sending off a complaint letter to the sender... I hope the coins aren't damaged by the treatment they got.

So far so good. YEs I will be letting the company know about the tape and coins.
So far it has bee a really good lot. Still working on the acetone bathing. I did run out though so a trip to the hardware store in the morning will be needed. I think I will get them all the major stickiness off with the first bath. Another bath will be needed to get them all the residue though.

Update, got them all washed in Acetone once. Will wash them again tomorrow. So far I've sorted by date: 48 - 1950's 39 - 1940's 22 - 1930's 35 - 1920's 30 - 1910's 11 - 1909 1 - 1929 with a hole 1 - IDH flattened 2 - 1 Memorial backs 159 total copper pennies. Some are in really nice shape. I'll post more and pictures later. But over all a nice haul!!

Nice, except for the method of shipment! Years ago I was given an album of a few hundred common foreign coins that my late uncle kept from places he'd visited. He'd dutifully taped them all onto pages of a photo album, using clear packing tape to completely cover them. Took a while to get them all free from the tape, and a nice long acetone bath took care of the sticky mess...

Got back from the hardware store with more acetone, and another bath seems to have gotten the rest of the residue off. I still have to go through them all and update my penny albums and such. Here are a couple of pictures of the nicer finds so far. The 1923 has a counter stamp on it. And that 1949 has an awesome rainbow tone to it that isn't showing on camera. I got this lot of peenies for dirt cheap for what is here!!

HEY! is that counterstamp of the Masons' compass & Square raised or incused? I ask cause it looks raised to me which would be impressive.

Common sense to remove the sticky from the tape. These sorts of glues contain oxidizing agents that react with the metal, and can result in inorganic residues that acetone cannot remove.
