@chip, since the doubling seems to go all the way around the letters, that might be Longacre doubling, but I'm not positive. Here is a link to a super explanation by our own @westcoin:

This looks like Longacre's doubling. The coin's designer, James Barton Longacre, is known for this. The lettering on the coins he designed have a doubled shape around the edges.

From Error-Ref.com

Quote:
There are two theories for Longacre's doubling. The first, which is most popular, is that the master die was placed into the die steel to form the master die. To add details to the die, the engraver would then shave the sides of the punch used to add design elements, leaving a lip on that punch's sides. The engraver would then conduct an extra hard hit to the punch leaving the shaved sides effects into the die. The effect would eventually wear off as the master die did age, which is why not all coins from a particular working die would have the Longacre's doubling.

This is the second scenario. After adding the design elements to the master die, the engraver would move the punch slightly and tap it again. This would produce a 'lip' on the die, and the effect would make the metal flow into the punched in design elements more readily. In theory, this would also have prolonged the die's life.

Yep there is only one doubled Two Cent coin and it is the 1866 DDR, this is Longacre's Doubling as already mentioned.

There are a few within the series that exhibit actual doubling. This does appear to be Longacre's Doubling here though.

I apologize as I worded that very poorly, there is only one reverse doubled die in the entire Two Cent series.

There are quite a few neat double die obverse, including one of the very largest spreads of any double dies around, the 1867, of which I have a dozen or so, the best was a MS64RB in NCG which I sold, currently the nicest one I have is a raw AU and a slabbed VF-30 PCGS example.

There are obverse double dies of the Two Cent series in:

1864 SM
1864 LM
1865 Plain 5
1865
1867
1868
1869
1870
1871
1872

There are multiples of different double dies on some dates as well, like 1864, 1865, 1867, 1871.

But the OP coin posted is most definitely "Longacre's Doubling" not Strike Doubling or anything else.

And thanks for that link Spence, saved me time from looking for it, my 2nd post right below the one you linked says basically what I just typed above, but with more time put into it. LOL.
