I came across a 1964 Nickel that weights a little low at 4.66g. all the other nickels I have weighed have been alot closer to 5.0g. It doesn't look super worn or acid bathed. The back does look a little suspect, but still strong in places.

I have a washer nickel here and the washer nicker weighs 4.65g that I used for comparison.

Thanks!

It might have started out on the low side and lost more weight from wear. Congrats on 100 post

Oh hey, thanks! Didn't realize I hit 100!

I had considered something along that line, but just seemed a little odd to be so low and not worn more. The reason I asked. :)

I don't have a more definitive explanation either. Will you keep it as an oddity?

Thin planchet? — although strike does not appear particularly weak. 0.34 g is 7% below normal. Maybe keep as a curiosity?

It seems to match other nickels of the same date on the outside. I wonder if there is a small air pocket on the inside. I am defiantly keeping it as a curiosity piece.

Looks more like it was sanded on the obverse. Just a damaged coin.

Hey Coop. I think you may have looked at the wrong coin there. The "sanded coin" was used as a comparison. That coin is like that on both sides and is IMO a washer coin. The 1964 nickel was the one I found with the interesting weight.

@originalatog Honestly, I think you might just want to remove the pictures of the sanded coin. I got why you posted it, but I think it's just going to confuse some people who don't pay close enough attention. Everyone can google the standard weight and mint tolerance for a Jefferson nickel, so no real reason to show that the sanded one weighs the same. My guess is a slight rolled thin planchet error.
