A so-called roll of 'unsearched' Lincoln Wheat Cents? We all know that there is no such thing as 'unsearched', it's just a matter of when and by whom it was searched. If the last time it was searched was 1935, it would be worth more than if the last time it was searched was 1995. I think a nickel per cent, aka $2.50 would be the maximum to pay for an unsearched roll. A roll of "junk silver"? I hear 10X is pretty much the going standard retail rate. Would you pay this retail rate or try to get it cheaper? A roll of so-called 'unsearched' Buffalo nickels? Barber/Mercury Dimes? Quarters? Just curious!

I would pay 10x for junk silver halves as long as anyone but JFK is on the front, however I don't buy much of it because I am always looking for the same at only 9x face. I don't buy the others except maybe for a gift, and then I am not going to quibble over whether I pay 3 cents or 5 cents or whatever per wheat.

I pay $2/roll for wheats from my local coin guy as it is, and these are all searched, so $2.50 seems awfully low. If it was truly unsearched, I'd have to think it would approach $10/roll, but probably about $6 or $7/roll.
I have no idea about the rest.

I prefer it when the sellers are honest and say that they're selling an assortment of coins from XXXX-XXXX. For example, I paid $10 for a roll of Lincoln cents that were 1910-1919 with 50% mint marks. I knew they weren't going to be any keys or semi-keys, but my early Lincoln set is so weak I still got some upgrades out of the deal. For silver, from the ebay watching I do, you can usually get Roosevelt dimes for 9x-10x. Mercury dimes 10x-11x for legible common dates. Walking Liberty halves have been very hard to find at even 11x lately... even worn common dates are selling for around $6/each after shipping.

MtnCoinMan,
It is because I get those from roll hunting. Franklins and Walkers I sometimes find, but not often. I have plenty of JFK.

Let's say the best possible scenario, where someone squirreled away a $50 bag in 1922 on the west coast. Never searched at all, and kept in a safe for 87 years. If it were an airtight scenario, I would jump at the opportunity. I admit that's totally wishful thinking.

Wheaties "Unsearched" (truly): Would have to consider the source and wonder why they are selling them instead of searching them, but hypothetically...? $5 to $10...proof as KurtS's example $20 - $100 per roll if we are talking uncs. "Junk" Silver: 8 or 9X Face Buffalos, Mercs, ext..: a little higher than "Junk" Silver...10-12X Face Hey KurtS...If you find that bag of 22's...let me know I would give you at least face for 'em.

Quote:you can wake up now! Hehe...I don't think it's impossible, but highly improbable. After all, I found an unsearched cache of 30s-40s Canadian cents that contained 8 1949 "A to denticles" in VF30-AU50 (CV is ~$400 for that group)

Yes! I've paid up to $9.99/roll. That's right - 20 cents/coin! Occasionally I pick up a "high price" roll from a reliable seller and I'm rarely dissappointed. I've pulled a lot of AU/MS sliders from the teens and 20s out of these rolls. Going by Greysheet price, I've come out ahead of the game and it's loads of fun! The problem is 99% of the seller's out there will rip the shirt off your back. You have to find someone you trust. By the way; Has anybody seen the Coin World (January 12, 2009 pg. 37) ad about the 400,000 wheat hoard found in Cascade, Iowa? It makes good reading for what it's worth. Claims these coins haven't seen the light of day since the early 70's!

I've gone to nearly $11 for a roll of Mercury dimes, but usually in bulk so you get a better price per coin when shipped. The one thing about "junk" is if you look at them, sometimes I've found something of value and if you piece out or create a date run you can pay for the roll, fill some holes and have some silver left over. I've found some decent stuff, got 1 roll for $22, including ship, and found an AU 1939-S that I sold. You'd really be surprised at what are in some of these rolls, pennies I'd never trust though.
