I was wondering if anyone knows the origins of this novelty. It was a freebie from a LCS drawing.
I could only find Disney stuff examples.
Appear to be a 1955 obverse created in 1972 based on the reverse devices.
Just curious.

Looks similar to what is done in "penny machines," for lack of a better term, where you drop a penny and a couple of quarters into a slot, turn the crank, and have a squished penny drop out, imprinted with the design of whatever place you are visiting.

More than likely an advertising item there are a lot of people with rollers and the dies needed to create the elongateds can be had from a number of people. They also will custom design and then roll them to your desires, type of coins, years etc. I have a number of nickles, dimes and a few quarters in my collection. here is the web site for TEC http://tecnews.org/club/join-renew/

Neat. I like how much of the obverse design remains.

Yes halfamind & circus. The only other examples I could find completely altered the and reverse, such as the Disney examples, completely altering the coin.
No advertising here. Dedicated to the Jefferson nickel.
The restuck reverse is "72". So called obverse is "55".
Not a promotional alteration. Weird!
Thanks for the feedback. Wish I could find out the origin.

The one die is smooth not engraved to let the original show. I don't collect coins but I believe there are collectors that collect the type series of coins. The coin store that was passing them out would be know to the people that shopped at the LCS or the show. So no need to put an address or shop name on it Here is one from 1911 Is-Anyone-Familiar-With-The-His-Elongated-Nickel?-Don-Adams-Elongated-Type-Series

Looks like a stumper. It only fits in a silver dollar 2x2 which busted through the mylar due to the obsessive curvature created by the process of passing between the rollers. Just a guess.
I kinda thought the reverse would be an indicator. So all are stumped I suppose. My guess as as as good as anyone's.
Into the token box.

@dow, I think that the key to figuring this out is the "DA30" inscription between the two halves of the coin. As explained in this ebay listing (https://www.ebay.com/itm/384085347757), this is an indication that the design came from Don Adams. More specifically:

Quote:
Now retired, Don Adams was a commercial roller with a large client base. He was one of the early members of TEC and I believe he is a charter member. Mr. Adams designed and rolled a plethora of elongates. He destroyed most of his dies after he was finished satisfying his subscribers, thus assuring a limited number of pieces.

Indeed, if you use the keyword "ELONGATED TYPE SERIES", you will see a wide variety of similar items on ebay and elsewhere. I think that @circus' recommendation that you contact TEC is a good one.

Nope!

Your enlongated coin was, in fact, rolled by Donald P. Adams back in the early 1970s (1973/74).

Your piece is one of a 36-piece set that he produced as a "Type Set" of US coins. He recreated designs honoring everything form early US half cents to the Eisenhower
Dollar using either Lincoln Cents, Jefferson Nickels or Roosevelt Dimes as base coins.

The following were included in the Set:

1. Half Cent
2. Large Cent
3. Flying Eagle Cent
4. Indian Head Cent - Shield Reverse
5. Indian Head Cent - Wreath Reverse
6. Lincoln Head Cent - Wheat Ears Reverse
7. Lincoln Head Cent - Memorial Reverse
8. Two-Cent Piece
9 Lincoln Head Cent - Wheat Ears Reverse
10. Three-Cent Piece - Nickel
11. Three-Cent Piece - Silver
12. Five-Cent Nickel - Shield
13. Five-Cent Nickel - Liberty Head "V" - No Cents
14. Five-Cent Nickel - Indian Head / Buffalo - Raised Mound
15. Five-Cent Nickel - Jefferson
16. Five-Cent Nickel - Jefferson - Wartime
17. Half Dime - Draped Bust
18. Liberty Seated Dime
19. Barber Dime
20. Winged Liberty / Mercury Dime
21. Roosevelt Dime
22. Twenty-Cent Piece
23. Capped Bust Quarter
24. Liberty Seated Quarter
25. Barber Quarter
26. Standing Liberty Quarter
27. Washington Quarter
28. Capped Bust Half Dollar
29. Barber Half Dollar
30. Walking Liberty Half Dollar
31. Franklin Half Dollar
32. Kennedy Half Dollar
33. Liberty Seated Silver Dollar
34. Liberty Head / Morgan Silver Dollar
35. Peace Silver Dollar
36. Eisenhower Dollar

Not a complete US "Type Set," but certainly a pretty fair representation!

Great info Commems! I knew someone would be able to help.
Thanks.
This was a give away at one of my frequented LCS's. There was a large board on an easel with numbered coins in 2x2's stuck to the corkboard with pushpins. Reach in a bucket of assorted candy, each numbered with a sharpie, and get the corresponding numbered coin. I never expected this one. I was hoping for the Peace dollar right next to this one. There were about 150 coins on the board.
I had no idea what it was. As I have no interest in this, perhaps someone that does would like to have it for this same amount I paid for it, $0.
Thanks again. As usual, I learned something new hanging out around here .
