I showed this coin to the forum last 2 years ago, all replies leaned towards Grease Filled Die. After reading an old 2011 article in Coin World today I am not so sure.
spontaneous press mslfunction, improper RAM pressure, or a die adjustment failure? I just am not convinced Grease Filled Dies on modern presses are this dramatic. Opinions welcomed and thank you.

That is a Struck Through Grease error. It is a nice one. On a die adjustment (low pressure strike) you would not have an outside rim:

Note the rim/no rim issue? Still has a nice value, but no where near the same amount as a low pressure strike.

Interesting, I always thought the Louisiana Purchase included WA, OR & ID [out to the mouth of the Columbia River].

What is the major determining factor for a die adjustment strike?

The reeding appears fully struck and on a die adjustment error the reeding is generally weaker because of the lack of force needed to push the planchet into the collar fully.

Also, the devices are not obscured in a completely symmetrical fashion, which you would expect on a die adjustment error. The end of "Louisiana" on the top of the reverse (" ANA") is almost fully struck, but the corresponding spot on the obverse is not.
