to the CCF Not an error, just some circulation damage that make it appears as writing. There is no way "Ghost" letters an appear during the striking of a coin.
Damage is 99% of the time incuse on the coins fields and flattening on the raised devices. Sometimes raised if the coin was burned in a fire:
Stains are level with the fields/design. (Most often called cup holder coins)
Hub doubling will be incuse on the die and raised on the coins on raised devices. This type of doubling will enlarge the devices in the centers of the devices making them taller/wider. Hub doubling will be raised on the die and incuse on the coins with incuse devices. This type of hub doubling will reduce the size of the devices.
Machine Doubling is a reduction on the contours of the devices on inside and out side of devices on most often on one side of devices on raised devices.
Machine Doubling on incuse devices will enlarge the devices from die movement before/during/after the strike.
So because stuff is out there from striking issue, damage during circulation, intentional damage and true mint errors, if takes time to discern which is which. It takes patience to learn these things. But knowing all things don't all come at once. If it did, were would have graduated in the first year we went to school. So What helps? Learning what you want to collect first. If you just want to fill books with coins, or fill our minds with what there is out there. We all learn something new everyday unless we give up. So I posted this information to help you realize the scope of information. I could have posted thousands more images, but no use drowning in the the swimming pool the first time in. But take time and enjoy what you learn. Soon you will be teaching others. What took me years to learn by myself, I've passed on to others as simple as possible. When I learn, I was give yes or no answers. Not why or why not? Thus I feel if they understand why, then there will be less questions the next time. Hope all enjoy this information. CoopHome: What is out there that is is not a collectable and why?
As I've mentioned before, I always try to get everyone to see what I see on a coin. Pointing out plus and minus of every thing I note. So that way you will see what I see on a coin. Questions? Always ask.
