Found this 1921 in fairly nice condition. Turned it over and found a moderate lamination loss and whatnot. A win-win. The pit at the bottom of the coin is quite deep, while the rest is some peeling and some loss.

@tb, that is interesting. It might be good to record the weight as a decent chunk is missing.

Well now that does seem like something I should have done, so I pulled it from the 2x2 and weighed it. Still coming in at 3.08g so nothing special with the weight. But when I put it back in a new 2x2 I noticed it has roughly 15 degree rotated dies. Not enough to be notable, but a bit more than just trivial.

That 'pit" does look deep. Nice Lam.

A really nice, deep lamination.

When would you guess that the piece separated from the coin? Would the movement of the press pull the section away or maybe something in the distribution process? I understand that it isn't possible to know exactly when, but what would you think? Do the separated pieces show up in the mint sewn bags from time to time?

Just wondering.

I'd say any of the ones where the lamination loss came at or after the strike has a chance of being found with the coin. I can say with certainty that it does happen, note this coin I posted back around January of 2020.

The 1921 I just found in a partial roll of 1921 coins. The 1958-D and laminate piece were in a mixed roll (tube) of wheats I bought from a huge estate collection. They weren't even side by side, just both parts were in the same tube. That guy was a serious collector and found a lot of great coins in that bunch (was sad when he died, as was a fixture at my LCS).
